Chiropractic and Pregnancy

Throughout a woman's pregnancy, her body undergoes significant changes in shape and size as her baby grows and develops. These changes often manifest as pain and discomfort. Common areas of musculoskeletal pain during pregnancy include sacroiliac joint pain, sciatica, pubic bone pain, carpal tunnel-like symptoms, and even neck pain and headaches. Many women think they are stuck with these pains since they are "just a part of being pregnant". Chiropractic adjustments can be very effective in alleviating these symptoms brought on by the added biomechanical stresses of pregnancy and can make the pregnancy a more comfortable and enjoyable experience.

When the bones that make up the pelvis and lumbar spine become restricted in their normal movement, the fetus can experience constraint. This may affect his/her ability to move and can even change the ideal positioning of the baby for labour and delivery. One of the biggest benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy that has been shown in some studies is that it may decrease labour time.

Chiropractic Adjustments During Pregnancy
Due to the ever-growing belly, women often think that they can't go to the chiropractor, since they wouldn't be able to lie on our table. Our tables are designed with moving parts and we have special pillows to accommodate the belly to make adjustments comfortable. Chiropractic treatments are also safe for both mom and baby.

You don't have to be experiencing pain to make an appointment with a chiropractor. Ideally it can be used as a preventative measure to reduce the discomfort in the later stages of pregnancy. Frequency of treatments can vary depending on the individual, but it is typically suggested to make an appointment as regularly as your monthly medical check-ups in early pregnancy. As the pregnancy progresses, a higher frequency of visits is often required due to more rapid postural changes combined with more relaxed ligaments.

Chiropractic is a treatment that has both immediate benefits of relief and improved posture, and long-term benefits of reduced labour times. After the delivery of the baby, chiropractic can also be an essential part in the mother's post-natal care, restoring a state of balance to the pelvis and spine.
